Founded in 2023, the UCSF Emergency Data Lab advances emergency care through the integration of clinical expertise, data science, and artificial intelligence. We focus on improving care for all patients, especially children, by addressing real-world challenges faced in emergency settings.
Our team brings together clinicians, data scientists, engineers, statisticians, epidemiologists, and informaticians to develop clinically grounded, scalable tools. We work across disciplines to support diagnostic precision, guide clinical decision-making, and improve operational workflows. Our work emphasizes improving the emergency care of sick and injured children through multimodal data harmonization, expert-level curation, and AI-driven clinical decision support, grounded in a shared commitment to evidence, impact, and real-world utility.
Vision
Trusted emergency care delivered anywhere for anyone.
Mission
To innovate trusted emergency care anywhere for anyone by developing tools that integrate seamlessly into clinical practice, validating them through rigorous and innovative clinical trial design, and accelerating their translation into the settings that need them most. We build community and cross-disciplinary partnerships to advance clinical medicine and improve emergency care for all.
Message from the Principal Investigator
As a general and pediatric emergency physician, I’ve seen firsthand how gaps in clinical expertise, data quality, and system design impact patient care, especially in fast-paced, high-stakes environments like the emergency department. I founded the Emergency Data Lab to unite people with varying perspectives and skillsets to solve these challenges in partnership with clinicians and patients. Our goal is not just to publish papers or build tools, but to make real, measurable improvements in emergency care.
